Our Process

A practical approach to local production

At Ethical Edge Collective, we take a clear and practical approach to clothing production. As a small Brisbane-based studio, we work on selected projects that suit our current capacity, workflow, and strengths — helping bring garments to life with quality workmanship, honest communication, and realistic timelines.

Step 1: Initial Enquiry

Every project starts with an initial conversation.

We’ll ask for details about your garment, quantities, timeline, and current stage of development so we can understand what you need and whether your project is a good fit for our studio.

Useful information includes:

  • garment type
  • estimated quantities
  • whether patterns already exist
  • whether sampling is needed
  • fabric and trims status
  • desired timeframe
  • size range
  • branding or label requirements

As a small studio, we assess each enquiry individually based on scope, complexity, and current production capacity.

Step 2: Project Review

Once we understand your enquiry, we review the project in more detail.

At this stage, we look at:

  • whether the garment suits our current capabilities
  • whether the timeline is realistic
  • whether development support is needed
  • whether the scope is clear enough to quote
  • whether the project fits within our production flow

If the project is a good fit, we’ll outline next steps. If it isn’t, we’ll let you know honestly.

Step 3: Quoting & Scope

If your project is suitable, we prepare a quote based on the scope of work.

Depending on the project, this may include:

  • patternmaking
  • grading
  • sampling
  • sample revisions
  • cutting
  • sewing
  • finishing
  • labels and packaging
  • production coordination

We aim to be clear about what is included, what assumptions have been made, and what may affect pricing or timelines moving forward.

Step 4: Development & Sampling

Where required, the next stage is development and sampling.

This may involve:

  • reviewing existing patterns or tech packs
  • coordinating patternmaking or adjustments
  • preparing an initial sample
  • checking fit and construction
  • making agreed revisions before sign-off

Some projects may arrive production-ready, while others may need development work first. We assess this case by case.

Step 5: Production Planning

Once the scope is confirmed and the project is approved to move forward, we schedule it into production.

As a small studio, production timing depends on:

  • current workload
  • project complexity
  • material readiness
  • approval status
  • internal production priorities, including Birds on Bikes

We focus on realistic scheduling rather than overpromising, so each project can move through production with care and attention.

Step 6: Production

Production is managed from our Brisbane studio, with a focus on quality workmanship, practical workflow, and clear communication.

Depending on the project, this may include:

  • cutting
  • sewing
  • finishing
  • quality control
  • packing

Because we operate on a small scale, we take on a limited number of projects and work carefully to maintain standards across everything we produce.

Step 7: Delivery & Next Steps

Once production is complete, we arrange collection or delivery and confirm any final details.

For some clients, that may be the end of the project. For others, it may lead into repeat orders or future production planning.

We value long-term working relationships, but always within a scope and workflow that remains realistic and manageable.

Our Approach

What matters most to us is keeping the process clear, practical, and well scoped.

We believe in:

  • honest communication
  • realistic timelines
  • thoughtful local production
  • clear expectations
  • quality over overcommitment

Rather than trying to offer everything, we focus on the projects we can deliver well.

  • Clear scope from the beginning

  • Realistic timelines based on actual capacity

  • A more personal, small-studio approach

  • Selected local production services

  • Quality-focused, practical workflow

  • Honest communication throughout
