About Us
Ethical Edge Collective
Made locally. Scoped realistically. Done well.
Ethical Edge Collective is a Brisbane-based clothing manufacturing studio operating alongside Birds on Bikes, our in-house cycling apparel brand.
We focus on selected local production services that suit our current capacity and allow us to deliver quality work with clear communication, practical timelines, and a more personal approach to manufacturing.
As a small studio, we believe in doing good work well. That means being intentional about the projects we take on, maintaining realistic production flow, and building a business that supports both our clients and our own long-term sustainability.
Our Story
Ethical Edge Collective was founded by designer and entrepreneur Barbara, who launched her own activewear brand, Birds on Bikes, after struggling to find cycling clothing that truly fit, flattered, and lasted.
As the brand grew, so did the need for better production control, better quality, and a more hands-on approach to making garments locally. What began as an in-house production solution for Birds on Bikes evolved into Ethical Edge Collective — a small manufacturing studio built on practical experience, local making, and a strong understanding of the realities of garment production.
Today, Ethical Edge Collective operates with a tighter, more focused model. Rather than trying to be everything to everyone, the studio works on selected projects that are a good fit for its workflow, strengths, and available capacity.
Our Approach
We take a practical approach to local production.
That means we focus on:
- quality workmanship
- clear communication
- realistic timelines
- manageable production
- thoughtful decision-making
- ethical business values
While Ethical Edge Collective is no longer accredited by Ethical Clothing Australia, ethical practice remains important to how we operate. We continue to value fairness, transparency, responsibility, and building a business model that is sustainable in the real world.
We believe small-scale local manufacturing can offer something genuinely valuable: a more personal working relationship, more visibility, and a clearer, more honest production process.
What We Do
Ethical Edge Collective offers selected clothing manufacturing services for projects that are well suited to a small local studio environment.
Depending on the project, this may include:
- small-run clothing production
- selected sampling and development support
- patternmaking and grading coordination
- repeat style production
- support for clearly scoped garment projects
Because we are a small studio, we are intentional about the work we take on. We assess projects based on fit, scope, complexity, timeline, and current capacity to ensure we can deliver to a high standard.
What Makes Us Different?
-
Built alongside a real brand
Ethical Edge Collective operates alongside Birds on Bikes, which means our production experience is grounded in the realities of running and producing for our own label.
-
Small-scale and hands-on
We are not a large factory. We offer a more personal, practical approach to local production.
-
Selected projects only
We take on a limited number of good-fit projects so we can protect quality, manage workflow, and avoid overcommitting.
-
Clear communication
We believe in honest conversations, realistic expectations, and keeping the process straightforward from the beginning.
-
Local production
All work is managed from our Brisbane studio, with a focus on quality workmanship and thoughtful execution.
-
Practical, realistic timelines
We focus on manageable production and clear scope, so projects can move forward in a way that works for both our clients and our studio.
Who We Work With
We are best suited to brands and businesses who value:
- local production
- realistic planning
- clear communication
- defined scope
- quality over volume
- a more personal working relationship
Not every project will be the right fit for our studio, and that’s okay. We’d rather take on the right work and do it well than overcommit and underdeliver.
What We Believe
We believe in making locally with care, clarity, and intention.
We believe production works best when timelines are realistic, communication is open, and scope is clearly defined.
We believe quality matters — not just in the finished garment, but in the way the work is approached from beginning to end.
And we believe a small studio can offer something powerful: thoughtful manufacturing, handled with experience and honesty.
